A number of CHHMA members braved the weather on Tuesday to attend an excellent presentation on the status of Ecommerce in Canada by Jack O’Leary of Edge by Ascential. Some key executives from Canadian Tire and Home Hardware were also on hand to take in the seminar.

A number of CHHMA members braved the weather on Tuesday to attend an excellent presentation on the status of Ecommerce in Canada at the Corporate Event Centre at CHSI in Mississauga. The event was another CHHMA-COPA joint event so a number of COPA members were also in attendance and we also had some key executives from Canadian Tire and Home Hardware including Mike Magennis and John Dyksterhuis on hand to take in the presentation.

The presenter was Jack O’Leary, a senior analyst out of Boston with Edge by Ascential (formerly PlanetRetail RNG). An organization that the association has partnered with to conduct a number of seminars/webinars and provide reports for our members on a number of retail, Ecommerce topics.

Mr. O’Leary spoke about the key drivers impacting Ecommerce in general and then focused in on Canada highlighting the unique dynamics and external factors in play in our country.

One of the key messages from the seminar is that store-based retail/physical in-store shopping still remains dominant although much of the sales growth is coming from online as Jack reviewed the top online players in the marketplace.

The presentation also touched upon what stores in the future will be involved in, key risks and competitive threats for the Canadian marketplace that vendors/retailers should be on the look for, the cross-border online shopping issue and opportunity, insights on how do to business with Amazon and some winning Ecommerce strategies for vendors.
